Two walks filled with local stories of life in the North which covers everything from birth, life, death and the rituals and traditional culture of this area. Lots of humour and insights into the community and area.
Walk ONE One - heads around the Drownings Memorial through the village of Portskerra and out west towards Baligill and the views of the geos.
Walk TWO - heads from the village up and across the peatlands to the headland of Big House Head to the fulmars and puffins. Both walks give spectacular views of the sea and the craggy coastline.
West End Stores, is the local shop where you can rent the Portskerra Melvich Audio Walk and find out about other activities happening in the area, plus pick up all your staple supplies and Post Office services.
AND at the other end of Melvich village there is The Halladale Inn http://halladaleinn.co.uk where you can also rent the Portskerra Melvich Audio Walk and they have a pub & restaurant. You can also camp, rent cabins, get tourist information there.
PLEASE READ - PRIOR TO PLANNING WALK OVER BIG HOUSE HEAD… There is some thought that the walk bridge crossing the Halladale river is in need of restoration, so please make your own choice about whether to use the bridge to cross the river. Walk ONE is fine but the second of my walks, Walk TWO, would need to be done under adjusted planning if you choose not to use the bridge. You can walk the road route around on the main road to the B-road taking you into Big House or you can navigate times to cross the river by the beach when the tide is out and then may have to return by road. See map link above to study routes.
The Melvich Hotel http://www.melvichhotel.co.uk is at the crossroads of Portskerra and Melvich villages and it has a pub, accommodations and restaurant. There are a number of B&B's in this area The Sheiling www.thesheilingbandb.com
Melvich is a beautiful beach and well known as a great surfing spot. It is 20 miles west of Thurso.
